Pep Guardiola says that his Manchester City team is ready to put their loss in the Champions League final of 2021 behind them for good on Saturday when they will play Inter Milan in Istanbul for the chance to win the trophy.

City’s only other appearance in the final of Europe’s top club competition was in Porto, where Chelsea beat them by a score of 1-0.

Guardiola was criticised at the time for making changes to a winning team. He surprised everyone by leaving out captain Fernandinho and Rodrigo from the middle of his midfield.

“I am pretty sure that two years ago what we planned, what we had in mind, was to have success against Chelsea. It didn’t work and that is why all the people said the decision was wrong,” Guardiola said on Friday just before his team trained on the pitch at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium.

“Tomorrow will be the same, have a plan, have an idea and communicate to the players. We are ready.”

That game was also sad for Kevin De Bruyne, who was hurt when he collided with Antonio Rudiger, a defender for Chelsea. De Bruyne left the field in tears.

“We were not good enough on the day and you have to accept it,” De Bruyne said on Friday. “Luckily we have another chance, another opportunity to prove we can win this competition.”

City is trying to win the Champions League for the first time in their history. They already have the Premier League title and beat Manchester United 2-1 in the FA Cup final last weekend thanks to two goals from Ilkay Gundogan.
