Barcelona were left on the brink of Champions League elimination after a heavy 4-0 defeat against PSG in their round of 16 first leg encounter on Tuesday.

Birthday boy Angel Di Maria opened the scoring with a superb free kick before Julian Draxler finished superbly to hand the hosts a 2-0 advantage heading into the break. Di Maria made it three in the 55th minute before Edinson Cavani completed the rout with a goal in the 71st minute.

‘It’s impossible to have a better birthday and performance,’ said Angel Di Maria after his matchwinning performance.

‘I’m very happy with how the team played. It was a wonderful display, fully deserved.’

The loss leaves Barcelona analmost  impossible mountain to climb as no side has ever progressed to the quarter-finals after such a heavy defeat.

‘We had a bad day in every way,’ Iniesta told Mundo Deportivo. ‘In the return we have to try to get as close as possible to turn it around, which is very difficult, but we will give everything.

‘The word “attitude” is one I have never liked and I do not think it is linked to these players or this team.

‘In the end it is a matter of football. I do not like to talk about attitude when it is not [the reason for defeat].’
