Harry Kane scored four goals to become England’s top scorer in the Champions League following Bayern Munich’s 9-2 thrashing of Dinamo Zagreb at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
Kane scored a penalty after 19 minutes and scored a second-half hat trick to reach 33 Champions League goals, surpassing Wayne Rooney’s 30.
Bayern’s custodian Manuel Neuer was injured after halftime, and Zagreb scored two goals in two minutes to narrow the lead to 3-2 after five minutes.
On his Champions League debut, Michael Olise scored twice, Raphael Guerreiro, Leroy Sane, and Leon Goretzka also scored for Bayern.
“An amazing game — a bit of a crazy game,” Kane told DAZN.
“It’s the first time I’ve scored three (penalties) in a game. That doesn’t happen at all really.
“I practice my penalties, I have a good routine but to be honest I didn’t really know what to do for the third one, but thankfully I was able to put it away.”
Kane claimed Bayern “got away with” their second-half mistake but “against the top opposition we can get punished for that, so we need to sort that out”.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany celebrated a Champions League record win in his debut.
“I’m just happy for the lads. They scored the goals, I didn’t score any,” a smiling Kompany told DAZN.
The former Manchester City captain praised his side’s mentality, saying: “We conceded two goals but we stayed calm. It’s not ideal — I know already what happened and how we need to work on it.
“We need to have more control but that will come.”
The six-time Champions League champions had won all 20 opening matches since 2002-03.
The score is one goal higher than Bayern’s 2020 quarterfinal triumph over Barcelona (8-2).
The German giants won more than bragging rights, with goal difference expected to be even more crucial under the new Champions League single league format.
Bayern dominated early, but Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry’s shots were called offsides until VAR identified a foul on Aleksandar Pavlovic, bringing Kane to the spot.
The captain of England put the penalty past Ivan Nevistic. Bayern took the lead with two goals in five minutes late in the first half.
On 33 minutes, Guerreiro scored after Musiala’s chested service, and Olise scored on his Champions League debut from a Joshua Kimmich corner.
Neuer, who had stopped a Zagreb counter in the first minute, was substituted at halftime, which seemed to frighten the home side.
Bruno Petkovic scored in the 48th minute after turning in Ronael Pierre-Gabriel’s ball.
Takuya Ogiwara’s counterattack two minutes later raised concerns that Bayern’s first trophyless season in 11 years was back.
Kane scored three times in 22 second-half minutes to bring his Bayern total to 53 in 50 games, while Olise added a second and Sane and Goretzka scored to give Bayern a commanding win.
Two-time Champions League winner Thomas Mueller was substituted in the second half for his 152nd Champions League game, surpassing Barcelona’s Xavi.
