Frank Lampard has urged Chelsea to emulate their incredible run to Champions League glory in 2012 and forget about their current run of form.
Graham Potter was fired last week, and Lampard took over as manager of Chelsea until the end of the season.
Lampard’s first game in charge of Chelsea was a 1-0 loss to Wolves on Saturday. On Wednesday, he takes them to Real Madrid for the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal.
Chelsea is in 11th place in the Premier League after a terrible season. Thomas Tuchel was fired in September, and Potter was only in charge for seven months before he was also fired.
Even though they were terrible at home, the west Londoners made it to the last eight in Europe.
It would be a big surprise if Lampard beat holders Real, but he knows how to beat the odds in the Champions League.
Eleven years ago, Lampard led Chelsea to an unexpected victory in the Champions League.
The Blues came in sixth place in a disappointing top-flight season. In March, Roberto Di Matteo took over for Andre Villas-Boas, who was fired.
But in the Champions League, they came back from a 3-1 deficit in the first leg to beat Napoli in the round of 16. Then, in the semi-final second leg, they came back from a 2-1 deficit on aggregate to beat Lionel Messi and Barcelona, even though John Terry was sent off. It was a memorable night at the Camp Nou.
Didier Drogba’s last-second goal against Bayern Munich in the final set up a penalty shootout win over the Germans in their own Allianz Arena stadium.
As Chelsea gets on the plane to Madrid, it seems like they won’t be able to repeat that fairy-tale success, but Lampard says anything can happen if his players want it badly enough.
