Daniel Sturridge of Liverpool

Roberto Firmino came off the bench to fire in a stoppage-time winner as Liverpool downed Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 in a Champions League classic at Anfield.

Liverpool opened the scoring after 30 minutes as Daniel Sturridge rose highest to head home a pin-point Andre Robertson cross.

Just five minutes the Reds doubled their lead. Georginio Wijnaldum was brought down in the box and the referee was quick to point to the spot. James Milner stepped up and made no mistake in dispatching his spot kick into the back on the net.

PSG then pulled a goal back five minutes before time as Thomas Meunier was on hand to volley home a Angel Di Maria cross.

2-1 to Jurgen Klopp’s men at the break.

Liverpool dominated the opening 20 minutes of the second half and really should have put the game to bed.

Kylian Mbappe, however, then  appeared to have salvaged a draw for PSG after levelling the scores in the 83rd minute with an emphatic finish following a delightful Neymar run.

Mbappe then turned to the villain as the World Cup winner gave away possession 25 yards out from his own goal to Firmino, who rifled his shot across Alphonse Areola into the bottom corner to ensure last season’s beaten finalists got off to a victorious start in Group C on Tuesday.

PSG had fought back from 2-0 down, Liverpool leading thanks to a Daniel Sturridge header and James Milner’s penalty, but Jurgen Klopp’s men deserved to come out on top.
