Pep Guardiola is out to exact his revenge on Thomas Tuchel after his 2021 Champions League final defeat to Chelsea as Manchester City prepares for their Champions League quarter-final clash against Bayern Munich.
City plays Bayern in the first leg of the quarterfinals of the Champions League on Tuesday. Guardiola is still trying to get City to win its first title in Europe’s top club competition.
Two of the best managers in the world, Guardiola and Tuchel, will go head-to-head in a tactical battle. Two years ago, Tuchel beat Guardiola in the Champions League final.
When Chelsea beat City 1-0 in the final in Porto two years ago, Tuchel was in charge.
Guardiola was said to have overthought his team choice for the final against Chelsea, who had also beaten City in the FA Cup and Premier League while Tuchel was in charge.
Guardiola has a chance to get his own back on the two-legged tie now that Tuchel is in charge of Bayern. In September, Chelsea fired Tuchel, so Bayern hired him.
“I was sad but I congratulated him and Chelsea for the victory. It happened,” Guardiola told reporters on Monday.
“We try again. Defeats and victories stick at the same level. It is forgotten just the same. I don’t pay attention to what happened in the past. It’s part of the game.
“I reviewed the game a month ago and it was not as bad as I thought. It was a tight game, like they always have been against Chelsea in this period.”
Guardiola added, “When I play against Tuchel, I try to figure out how good they are in every area.” It would have been hard with Julian Nagelsmann, and it will be hard with Tuchel, too.
“I don’t pay that much attention, more attention on what I do with my team.”
Guardiola knows how good Bayern is because he was in charge of the club for three years, from 2013 to 2016. During that time, Bayern won three Bundesliga titles.
But he didn’t win the Champions League when he was with City, and he didn’t win it when he was with Bayern.
