Barcelona defender Sergi Roberto insists that his side never stopped believing that they could overcome a 4-0 deficit against Paris Saint-Germain.
The Spanish giants came back from a 4-0 deficit in the first leg to claim a 6-5 aggregate victory over the Ligue 1 side, and book their place in the next round of the competition.
Barca opened third scoring in the third minute through a Luiz Suarez header, before the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar Jnr and Roberto got on the score sheet, while Edison Cavani scored PSG’s only goal of the night.
The 25-year-old, who came on as a 77th-minute substitute, scored the winning goal to put his side through to the next round in what was the greatest comeback in the history of football.
‘I went all out for the ball and then I saw that the goalkeeper wasn’t going to stop it,’ Roberto told the Barcelona website.
‘It looked grim after they scored to make it 3–1 for us, but we did the job. We never stopped believing.’
Meanwhile, Barca defender Gerard Pique insists that after his side’s comeback performance against the French Ligue 1 side, he believes that the Spanish giants are still the best.
‘We’ve seen comebacks, but never anything like this. They tried to bury us, and one day we’ll give up the throne, but today we proved that we’re still the best,’ Pique said.
‘Anyone who stopped believing should go back and try again. Their goal to make it 3–1 was a big blow, but a miracle occurred. It’s a lesson for life — there is always a way.’
Barcelona will now turn their attention back to the La Liga when they take on Deportivo La Coruna at the Estadio Municipal de Riazor on Sunday.
Kick-off has been scheduled for 17:15.
