Manchester City advanced to the last 16 with a comfortable victory over Young Boys while Borussia Dortmund dented Newcastle United’s chances of reaching the next round of the Champions League.
Manchester City 3-0 Young Boys
Erling Haaland brushed off injury concerns to help Manchester City secure their place in the Champions League last 16 following their comfortable 3-0 win over Young Boys at the Etihad.
Haaland got better after twisting his ankle in Saturday’s 6-1 Premier League win over Bournemouth. He then scored the first goal for last season’s treble winners from the penalty spot after 23 minutes.
Phil Foden doubled their lead with a beautiful run in stoppage time of the first half. Six minutes into the second half, Haaland scored from 25 yards out to secure City’s fourth straight win in Group G.
Soon after Haaland scored his 39th goal in 34 Champions League games, Sandro Lauper, a midfielder for the Swiss team, was sent off. With a point against RB Leipzig in their next game, City can lock up first place.
AC Milan 2-1 Paris Saint-Germain
AC Milan secured their first win in the Champions League after claiming a 2-1 victory over Paris St-Germain in Group F.
Milan Skriniar, a former Inter Milan defender, put PSG ahead, but their lead only lasted three minutes before Rafael Leao scored an amazing equaliser. Giroud then sealed a very important win at the San Siro right after halftime.
Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 Barcelona
Barcelona missed out on becoming the first side to reach the Champions League knockout stages after suffering a shock 1-0 defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk.
Danylo Sikan’s huge header gave Shakhtar Donetsk an amazing 1-0 win over LaLiga champions Barcelona in their Group H match.
Borussia Dortmund 2-0 Newcastle United
Newcastle United’s hopes of qualifying for the last 16 took a hit after suffering a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund at Signal-Iduna Park.
Niclas Fullkrug’s goal put the Bundesliga team ahead in the middle of the first half. Newcastle’s Joelinton had several chances to level the score, but Julian Brandt’s late goal on the counter-attack ended any hopes of a comeback for Eddie Howe’s team.
Newcastle will have to work hard to make it to the next round after this result.
They are now three points behind Dortmund and have a game on the road against Paris Saint-Germain coming up. If things don’t go their way, it could end their chances of moving on.
