Djokovic and Halep will be looking to start the year off strongly

Novak Djokovic and Simona Halep will be the top seeds for next week’s Australian Open, while defending champions Roger Federer and Caroline Wozniacki are both seeded third.

Djokovic and Federer are aiming to make history by claiming a record seventh Australian Open crown when the tournament starts at Melbourne Park on Monday.

The pair face a stern challenge from the likes of Alexander Zverev (4), Rafael Nadal (2), South Africa’s Kevin Anderson (5) and last year’s beaten finalist Marin Cilic (6).

Halep takes the top seeding among the women, courtesy of her world No 1 ranking, but she enters the tournament with only one match in four months under her belt after being sidelined due to injury.

Germany’s Angelique Kerber is seeded second followed by Wozniacki and US Open Champion Naomi Osaka. Sloane Stephens rounds off the top five.

Serena Williams enters the tournament seeded 16, but she is odds-on favourite to claim a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title.
