Roger Federer defeated Adrian Mannarino in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon for a remarkable 16th time.
Federer, who came into this fourth-round match in great form, came out of the blocks firing and broke Mannarino thrice to win the first set 6-0 in just 17 minutes.
Mannarino put up more of a fight in the second, as Federer got the only break of serve in the 11th game. Federer then held serve in the next game to take a two-set lead.
The third followed the same pattern as the second as both men held serve with relative ease. In the eighth game, Mannarino had two chances to break Federer’s serve, but the Swiss maestro dug deep to hold serve for the 8oth consecutive time at Wimbledon. He broke Mannarino the very next game and held serve to book his spot in the quarter-finals with a 6-0, 7-5, 6-4 victory.
Federer will face Kevin Anderson in that quarter-final after the South African won a four-set battle against Gael Monfils.
Anderson stormed to a two-set lead after taking both of the opening sets in tie-breakers. In the third set, Monfils got a break in the sixth game, but Anderson broke back in the ninth. It looked like the pair would be heading for a third tie-break, but Anderson lost serve at the most critical point and the Frenchman took the third 7-5.
In the fourth set, both men had had multiple break points but none of them were converted as the final set also went to a tie-break, which Anderson took 7-4 to seal his spot in the quarter-finals for the very first time with a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2), 5-7, 7-6 (4) victory.
On the women’s side, Serena Williams had no problems in dispatching Evgeniya Rodina in just 62 minutes to book her place in the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the 13th time. Williams broke Rodina’s serve twice to claim the first set 6-2. In the second, she lost her serve once, but she broke her opponent’s three times to seal a comprehensive win.
Williams will face Camila Giorgi in the quarters after she beat Ekaterina Makarova 6-3, 6-4 earlier on Monday.
