Angelique Kerber made light work of Serena Williams to claim her first Wimbledon title on Saturday afternoon.

Kerber, ranked 170 places higher than Williams, came into the match as the underdog. All the pre-match talk was about Williams’ great comeback after becoming a mom.

Kerber embraced this tag and did not show any of the nerves from two years ago when she lost to Williams in the final. She took advantage of her opponent’s early errors to break her in the very first game. She held her serve to take an early lead, but Williams stormed back, winning the following three games to lead 3-2.

But that was the last time she won a game in the first set. Williams double-faulted a couple of times to give Kerber a sniff, and she pounced to break again in the seventh game. She broke Williams a third time in the ninth game to claim the first set 6-3.

The second was a much tighter affair – even if the scoreline was exactly the same. At 3-2 up, the German grabbed her opportunity as Williams struggled with her serve once again, hitting a ferocious forehand to claim the vital break. Try as she might, Williams could not get a break back and Kerber claimed her maiden Wimbledon title and the third Grand Slam of her career.
