Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov have both received fines and lengthy bans for the ugly scenes after their fight at UFC 229.
McGregor has been fined $50,000 (R680,966) and suspended for six months, while Nurmagomedov received the heavier penalty, being docked $500,000 (R6,809,665) and banned for nine months. The suspensions are backdated to the fight, which took place in early October last year.
Khabib’s ban will be reduced to three months if he agrees to record an anti-bullying message for the Las Vegas Police Department. The fine will be deducted from his purse for UFC 229, according to the terms handed down by the Nevada Athletic Commission.
His camp was unhappy at the disparity in fines.
‘I don’t think it’s fair,’ his manager, Ali Abdelaziz, said. ‘Khabib gets $500k and Conor gets $50k? I think it’s bulls**t.’
Nurmagomedov simply tweeted ‘politics forever’.
Nurmagomedov beat McGregor in the fourth round via a rear-naked choke in Las Vegas in October. After the fight, he leapt into the crowd and fought with one of McGregor’s trainers. Meanwhile, men thought to be members of the Russian’s team entered the octagon and attacked McGregor.
Nurmagomedov apologised for his actions, but said he was provoked during the buildup to the fight when McGregor had mocked his religion, father and country.
McGregor has not responded to the ban or fine yet.
