Barcelona welcomed Manchester City to the Camp Nou on Wednesday as Lionel Messi starred in a dominant 4-0 win.
Both sides looked to press high and maintain possession in the early stages of the game before Barcelona ran away with the match in the second half, with Messi at the heart of all that was good for Barca, netting a hat-trick and winning a penalty as the Catalan side romped to victory.
According to SASoccermag’s Opta-powered matchcentre, Messi made 55 touches of the ball over the course of his 90 minutes on the pitch.
Although he made just 18 of his 33 attempted passes, Messi was instrumental in getting his side on to the front foot, often trying audacious incisive balls in an attempt to split the City defence.
The Argentine’s shooting proved lethal on the night as he scored three times with just four shots. His first came as he dribbled the goalkeeper after Fernandinho’s unfortunate slip. The forward then netted his second has he was fed a loose ball and drilled home from the edge of the area, before sealing his hat-trick after being played in by Luis Suarez.
